The Senior Director of Building Operations leads building maintenance, renewal, renovations, facilities operations, and vendor operations for the university. This position will manage the following groups: Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing, Architectural Trades, Fleet, and District Management. The Senior Director will focus on maintaining strong customer relationships, persistence in workplace efficiency, and enhancing the district maintenance model, this important leadership role within the Academic Projects and Operations group in Land, Buildings and Real Estate will lead a varied and diverse team of over 125 professionals, bargaining unit technicians, and administrators in providing support to mission critical teaching and research.
The Senior Director will collaborate across various departments within the LBRE organization and with external departments and stakeholders to maintain the existing culture of excellence in the Department of Facilities Operations. The successful candidate will bring visionary and critical thinking skills to help advance current initiatives for smart campus integration in university operations and maintenance. Primary Responsibilities Include:
Leading a staff of over 125 professionals, administrators, and bargaining unit technicians.
Overseeing all aspects of facilities management for 10 million gross square feet of academic and research space and university land (excluding residential and dining, commercial real estate and the SLAC research center properties), including renewal, preventative maintenance, predictive maintenance, and contracted services.
Managing the $30M annual Investment in Plant program that includes over 100 active renewal capital projects.
Maintaining Stanford's current status of zero deferred maintenance in academic facilities managed by LBRE.
Collaborating with the Department of Project Management, who will manage and deliver all maintenance and utilities capital projects.
Developing and managing multi-million dollar budgets for maintenance and renewal.
Developing and managing appropriate staffing levels that meet budget and service level goals.
Developing and implementing strategic long-range maintenance programs.
Developing regular reporting of Key Performance Indicators for maintenance and renewal to LBRE leadership.
Leading a first class customer service organization with 24/7/365 support for mission critical operations and world class teaching and research.
Maintaining a strong commitment to employee training and development, with particular emphasis on their safety and security.
Ensuring that the LBRE Core Values are followed by the workforce and in the workplace.

JOB PURPOSE: Responsibility for the leadership, broad oversight, and implementation of strategic and tactical planning involving facilities management, facilities operations, and maintenance staff and managers for LBRE
CORE DUTIES*:
Leading strategic planning; multiyear project prioritization, planning, and funding, and strategic condition assessment programs. Develop strategic plans for maintenance programs, and oversee implementation; consult on space inventory and allocation for assigned area(s); research and recommend department policies and strategies; identify long-range facility project/program needs.
Defining activities of assigned groups, assess staffing needs, commit resources, evaluate performance, and develop staff.
Overseeing facilities managers and/or technical professionals responsible for a comprehensive, multi-faceted facility.
Defining and leading local facilities activities, (or lead delegated activities in a larger unit), plan and direct department activities, and hold managers accountable for meeting established goals.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in engineering or other appropriate technical area, or an equivalent combination of technical education, training, and experience. Ten years of related, progressively responsible experience requiring extensive leadership and strategic expertise in facilities operations, maintenance, and planning, performing duties similar to those listed above.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Advanced knowledge of best practices in facilities management discipline.
Demonstrated experience managing large facility organizations, or experience in managing a large professional service organization.
Demonstrated experience as a senior manager with responsibility for developing and mentoring managers and senior professionals.
Advanced knowledge and application of relevant codes, regulations, and processes.
Demonstrated experience managing a large operational budget.
Experience working with bargaining unit workers and their trade unions.

Requires 24-hour response availability seven days per week for emergency situations.
